Thank you Dominick for posting this photo and pitching our show! Come by Tuesday night if you are in NYC!

Corita’s Eleanor Whitney during recording at GödelString Studio for the Brooklyn band’s ep, Memento Mori last February. They play the Delancey tomorrow night with Hilly Eye. It’s free and you should go. More from that session here.

Riot grrrl and visual culture

I had flyers like these during my RG days… Dandy Prof is always right on the money.

If somebody has not yet done it, there is definitely enough material out there for a paper on the visual culture of riot grrrl. So much imagery of little white girls!

Bedsider: In Review: A Ray of Hope for the Little Monsters

bedsider:

It’s funny the beacons of hope that can emerge in popular culture. Those of us who produce independent music tend to hold fast to do-it-yourself altruism and ideals, often at the expense of reach, but I for one have always had an unabashed love for pop. It is no easy thing to craft a hook….

I am totally obsessed with this song. Catchy beats and chorus, it totally captures my teenage dream to move to NYC and the frenetic energy of NYC. Somehow over the last ten years I did a lot of the things in this video: laughing and drinking with one night stands? Check! Partying with my gay friends and self? Check! Paying bills with the money I make? Check! Dying my hair pink? Check! Now I am old and respectable (hah), but I still love my NYC life. Almost as much as my imaginary Parisian life!

Omg, so awesome. Also CCS is in Detroit, my favorite city (seriously).

Did I mention that if you want to marry me you can just offer me these shoes (just consult with me on the color first)? Don’t bother with diamonds, I’m not that kind of girl, please. And even if these shoes are expensive, they are cheaper than a cheap diamond ring. So there.

Smith Journal is a new publication for discerning gents (and ladies who like reading about discerning gents). It’s heads-up and hands-on. A friendly guide to all things creative, intriguing, genuine and funny – full of stories, people, adventures, interesting conversations and gentlemanly style. The people behind Smith were sick of the same old man-mags banging on about the same old crap. They wanted to create something they’d be happy to read themselves. That smart, creative guys could peruse without shame, slap down on the coffee table, whack in their favourite old satchel or display proudly on the toilet reading rack. Something that looked good, but had substance, wit and inspiration. At a time when everything seems like it’s speeding up, Smith is a call to slow down. It’s about remembering, reviving and revamping forgotten traditions, skills and technologies. And backpedalling just enough to appreciate the good stuff in life. Like our readers, we’re not particularly obsessed with being the coolest, the biggest or the first in line. But we are interested in making things that last.
